Comic & Character Lab is a two day drawing and storytelling program designed for students who enjoy graphic novels, manga, cartoons, and creating their own characters and stories.

This program introduces the core building blocks of visual storytelling in a structured, approachable way, helping students understand how ideas turn into finished comic pages.

What students will do

Students will begin with quick concept work, learning the basics of character design and simple plot building so they understand how stories come together.

From there, they will explore:
• facial expressions and body language
• poses and movement
• inking and clean linework
• page layout and panel flow

Over the two days, students will:
• develop a small cast of characters
• design a cover concept
• create a short comic scene or mini chapter

The pace is engaging but guided, allowing creativity while keeping projects focused and achievable.

Materials and tools

Students will work with a variety of drawing and inking materials, including:
• pencils and erasers
• black fineliners
• markers
• smooth drawing paper for clean linework

Comic panel templates are available to support layout and storytelling flow.

Each student will also receive a small booklet to continue building their comic or graphic novel after the program.

All materials are provided.

Instruction

This program is led by Nathan, with Chris assisting.

Nathan has experience in art, graphic design, creative writing, and public speaking. He has developed his own graphic novel and has been passionate about drawing and storytelling since early childhood.

As a recent high school graduate, Nathan brings both skill and relatability to the studio. He enjoys helping younger students understand how ideas turn into characters, stories, and finished pages, and guides them through the creative process with clarity and encouragement.
