Layered Art: Gel Printing & Texture Painting for Beginners
Gel printing starts with a roller, paint and a smooth gel plate. Add stencils, shapes and textured materials, press paper onto the surface, then peel it back to reveal the print. That reveal is the fun part. Every layer changes what appears, and you’ll immediately want to pull another one.
During the first two weeks, we’ll experiment with color, pattern and layering while you build a collection of original prints. No drawing skills are needed, and there’s no pressure to make every print “perfect.” The unexpected ones often become the most interesting.
During weeks three and four, those prints become part of a finished painting. You’ll choose your favorite sections, arrange and layer them on canvas, add raised areas with texture paste, then use paint, shading and highlights to bring everything together. The finished piece will have printed patterns, blended color and actual dimension you can see and feel.
Every gel print and finished artwork created in this class will be different. We can’t show you exactly what yours will look like because no two ever turn out alike, but we’ll help you recognize what’s working, make confident choices and turn your prints into finished art that feels intentional.
While all materials are included for the prints/canvas art, you may also bring a small, clean item from home to upcycle, such as an old bottle, box or book/journal. We’ll use some of your prints to give it an entirely new look.
This is a great class for beginners, including people who swear they aren’t creative. You’ll leave with a completed texture painting plus extra prints to use for canvas art, collage, upcycled décor and other projects.
Be prepared to get a little messy! We recommend wearing an apron or old shirt.
