Participants will create an 8 x 10 mixed media shadow box using a combination of personal items and a wide range of studio materials, including mosaic glass, broken jewelry, buttons, small canvases, paper fragments, and found objects. The emphasis is on design, balance, and cohesion so the finished piece reads as artwork, not a collection of keepsakes.
The process begins with planning the composition. You will learn how to choose a strong focal element, reduce visual noise, and arrange supporting pieces so the eye moves through the work naturally. Editing and restraint are part of the process, and empty space is treated as a design element rather than something to fill.
Once the layout is established, you will paint and lightly texture the interior of the box to create a unified background. Objects are then layered, raised, or recessed to create depth and dimensional interest. Glass, metal, and tactile materials are introduced with intention to support the overall structure of the piece.
Participants are encouraged to bring a small handful of personal items. Bringing more than you expect to use is fine. Part of the workshop is learning how to select and edit from what you have. The studio provides an extensive range of materials so your piece does not rely entirely on personal objects.
Each participant receives an 8 x 10 glass front shadow box with approximately two inches of depth. The box comes in a distressed white finish and can be painted if another color better suits the composition.
You will leave with a finished mixed media artwork that carries personal significance
Participants should bring lightweight personal items, photos, or paper memorabilia that fit comfortably inside the box.
This is a 2.5 hour guided workshop. Class size is limited.
