Memory and Meaning Art Box

This series is a quieter, more intentional way to start the year. Instead of another big blank journal you feel guilty for not filling, we’re creating something small, meaningful, and easier to keep up with: a custom wooden box filled with hand-made 3x5 art cards.

Think nostalgic recipe box energy.  A place to tuck the things worth saving: color ideas, short notes, quotes that matter,  tiny paintings, personal reminders, and small pieces of creativity that feel good to make without the overwhelm.

Each week you’ll explore different mediums on small surfaces so you can try things without pressure. Acrylic, watercolor, gouache, collage papers, gel prints, markers, lettering, charcoal, and whatever else you want to test. These cards become mini art lessons you can keep adding to all year.  I'll guide you with tips and inspiration along the way as needed while demoing the array of art materials we have in the studio.

What You’ll Make
• A custom painted/stained wooden box to store your art pieces
• Around 20 finished 3x5 mini art pieces
• The start of a personal archive instead of a one-and-done project you'll want to keep adding to it!
• Category dividers to organize ideas, memories, quotes, or creative notes (optional if you want them)
• Handout with suggested materials and notes to help you continue your creativity.

Why This Works
• Small format means you finish pieces instead of abandoning half-done projects that overwhelm you.
• You get to try multiple mediums before investing in supplies
• Relaxed, friendly space focused on encouragement and exploration
• Feels personal and nostalgic instead of trendy or overly structured - it's all what you want it to be.
• No experience required even "non-creatives" can enjoy this tactile, hands on process.

  • Schedule
    Week 1
Build and finish your wooden box. Paint or stain it.  I'll talk about the various mediums we'll explore in the following weeks and get your ideas for what you want to explore.
  • Week 2
Gel prints.  We'll pull out printing plates, stencils, stamps and more as we explore monoprinting and how it is a simple way to create beautiful cards, backgrounds, and collage pieces.  It's also super fun and kind of messy so dress accordingly! (we'll use our finished prints in other works) After that we'll focus on medium exploration on practice sheets watercolor and pen, gouache textures, charcoal, acrylic markers, or mixed combos..  The last two weeks will be about creating our actual art pieces.
  • Week 3
We'll art it up and create beautiful cards using our prints and practice techniques from the previous weeks.
  • Week 4
Finish cards, create tabbed dividers, seal anything that needs sealing, and organize your box so it’s ready for the rest of the year.

Who This Is For
Anyone craving color and connection in winter, wanting inspiration without the pressure of a big canvas, or curious about mixed media but unsure where to start.  For the curious - all skills levels are welcome it is a safe and judgment free space to play and explore.
